August 15, 2013 New members elected to board of directors

Three community and business leaders have been elected to serve on Central Penn College’s board of directors: Carl E. Heininger, strategic enterprise sales manager with Comcast Business Services; Robert E. Kelly, Jr., partner in the law firm of Kelly, Parker & Cohen LLP; and Michael W. Schmid, partner with ATG Execution, a management consulting firm.

The new board members will serve three-year terms as they guide the college in delivering on Central Penn College’s mission, and meeting the needs of alumni, students, faculty and staff. Their first board meeting is this evening.

“We focused on recruiting the very best, most talented leaders to Central Penn’s already outstanding board,” says William Kobel ’81, chairman, Central Penn College board of directors. “Carl, Bob and Mike bring impressive technology, legal and marketing expertise and experience to the table. I’m excited about the contributions they will make as we support the leadership team and staff and faculty in continuing to provide an inspiring college experience for students, and strengthening our partnerships with the business community.”

The governing body of Central Penn College is the board of directors. Ultimately, the board is accountable for the college’s academic quality and planning, fiscal and academic integrity, assets and financial health. Heininger, Kelly and Schmid will replace three of Central Penn’s long-standing board members who reach the end of their terms on December 31.

Carl E. Heininger

Carl Heininger ’03 is the strategic enterprise sales manager of Comcast Business for the Keystone Region. In this role, Heininger leads a team that focuses on government, education, medical, finance and other major accounts across Pennsylvania. He has more than 14 years in the technology industry, with a diverse range of experience, holding positions as a technology consultant, technology director and senior network engineer. While working as a consultant for One System Consulting and Dellicker Strategies, Heininger provided guidance in strategic planning, technology planning and budget development to government and educational entities.

During Heininger’s tenure as a technology director at Capital Area Intermediate Unit, he led a team of 35, successfully completing one of the first wide area network in K-12—connecting 26 school entities in central Pennsylvania over 45 Mbps ATM networks. Heininger’s work has now been replicated across the state and country through other broadband grants and initiatives.

Heininger believes education is one of many important keys to success and served as a part-time professor at Central Penn College and Harrisburg University, specializing in systems design/analysis, organizational behavior/leadership, and network infrastructure. He holds a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering from University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Central Penn College.

Robert E. Kelly, Jr.

Robert E. Kelly, Jr., is a partner in the law firm of Kelly, Parker & Cohen LLP and practices in the areas of administrative and civil litigation. He is a member of several sections and committees within the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association and Pennsylvania Bar Association. Kelly also belongs to the Dauphin County Bar Association, the James S. Bowman Inn of the American Inns of Court (past president) and the Pennsylvania Defense Institute (past president).  A former Deputy Attorney General, he is a 1975 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and a summa cum laude graduate of Siena College in 1972. Kelly is an accomplished speaker and author in the legal field.

Kelly, who resides in Mechanicsburg, Pa., has been recognized annually in the Woodward White Best Lawyers in America publication in the area of insurance law since 2006. He served on the board of directors for the Central Pennsylvania Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the development board of Trinity High School; and is a former board member for the St. Thomas More Society.

Kelly also serves on the Central Penn College Education Foundation’s president’s circle.

Michael W. Schmid

Prior to his current position as partner with ATG Execution, a management consulting firm, Michael W. Schmid directed the worldwide marketing and product management programs for VAL-CO, serving as the vice president of marketing and business development for this global agriculture equipment manufacturer. His expertise lies in developing and clarifying strategy in fast-moving complex organizations and markets.

Following serving the United States Navy as a commissioned officer, Schmid managed two lines of business for Leitch Technology Corporation, a manufacturer and worldwide distributor of professional television, cable and satellite broadcast equipment. He later joined the Wolfgang Candy Company as managing partner and chief marketing officer.

Schmid earned a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in German language with a minor in naval science from Old Dominion University in Virginia. He serves as Junior Warden on the Vestry at St James Episcopal Church in Lancaster and on the boards of LancasterHistory.org, North York Properties and the York County Tourism Foundation. Schmid has recently served on the boards of the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the North Museum of Natural History and Science, and the Boy Scouts of America - Distinguished Citizen of Lancaster County Initiative. 

Schmid resides in Lititz, Pa.
