February 15, 2013 Three new athletic teams for 2013

Central Penn College announces the addition of three new United States Collegiate Association (USCAA) athletic teams for 2013.

In addition to men’s and women’s basketball, current and future Central Penn Knights now have the opportunity to play men’s baseball, women’s volleyball and co-ed cross country. The USCAA is a national organization that exists to provide quality athletic competition on a regional and national level for smaller institutions of higher learning and their student athletes. It currently has 82 members in 24 states, stretching across the nation, from Maine to Washington state. The association conducts national championships, names All-Americans and scholar athletes.

“Just as Central Penn works to ensure it is offering academic degree programs that are in demand, the college is meeting the needs of students outside the classroom by offering an array of sports teams,” says Athletic Director and Assistant Student Services Dean Ed Liesch. “I look forward to our first rosters of student athletes for each team—students who can set high standards in academics, sportsmanship, integrity and leadership for future Central Penn Knights.”

Baseball – Men’s

Beginning in spring 2013, baseball will be the first new program. Scott Miller, a part-time Central Penn professor with more than 30 years of playing and coaching experience, will be the head coach. Miller was a three-year starter for the baseball team at Mansfield University and has been the assistant coach at East Pennsboro High School for the past eight years.

Volleyball – Women’s

The women’s volleyball program will begin play in the summer 2013 term. Alumnus Jason Barshinger ‘03, the current assistant women’s basketball coach and former head coach of Central Penn’s men’s volleyball program in 2004 and 2005, has been named the head coach. Barshinger has eight years of coaching experience in basketball and volleyball.

 Cross Country – Coed

Cross country will begin competition during the summer 2013 term. Currently, Central Penn is accepting resumes and cover letters for the open cross country head coach position.

Central Penn has had sports programs, on and off, since the ‘20s. The first Central Penn basketball team dates back to 1926. For eighteen years, Central Penn was a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference, and advanced to the USCAA division in 2010. A partnership with East Pennsboro School District allows Central Penn College athletes to practice and compete in the East Penn High School gym, facilities and grounds. Players are currently being recruited for the three new teams.

The men’s basketball team recently finished its regular season 18-10 and received a bid today to the USCAA national championship. The 2013 USCAA Basketball National Championships will be held this year from Tuesday, Feb. 26-Saturday, March 2 at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus in Uniontown, Pa.
