William W. Hummel, Jr., MA

My strength as an instructor of mathematics is my commitment to working with individual students in order to ensure success. I know that I have accomplished my task as an educator when I have enabled the struggling student to succeed, assisted the advanced student in working at a more advanced level, and given all of my students both an understanding of a particular topic and a road map detailing how that topic fits in with other mathematical concepts. In summary, my philosophy of teaching is "learner-centric", and following this I continue to grow as an educator and to encourage students to grow in their ability to apply and appreciate mathematics.

Bill Hummel teaches mathematics in the Humanities department at Central Penn College. A career educator from a family of educators, he taught secondary level mathematics in Reading Pennsylvania for over 30 years. He earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Albright College and then went on to complete an M.A. in mathematics and a Pennsylvania secondary teaching certificate at Kutztown University. Bill’s fascination with the mathematical sciences led him to complete additional graduate work in the same field at the University of Delaware, and later at Drexel University. In addition to his teaching experience, Bill has maintained an active interest in software development and information technology, and was employed as a web applications developer before coming to Central Penn.
