Central Penn College’s Wansley named USCAA Player of the Week
Congratulations to Marqel Wansley for being named the USCAA men’s Division II Basketball Player of the Week.
The junior guard from Columbia, Pa., played two phenomenal games last week, as he helped Central Penn College defeat Bucks County Community College and Villa Maria. Against the Bucks County Centurions, he scored a triple-double––16 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds—in an 84–52 road victory for Central Penn.
Against 2019 National Championship participants Villa Maria, Wansley finished the game with 39 points and 8 steals, leading host Central Penn to an impressive 85–69 win. He shot a blazing-hot 71% from the field, including 6/6 from behind the three-point line.
“Marqel has been a fantastic addition to the program,” said Coach Dave Archer. “At his last school, he had many nights like this, so we knew it was a matter of time, he would have a dynamic game. But our last game [against Buck County] he was efficient, stable and played with excellent pace, which is something we preach to our guards.”
We recently caught up with Wansley, who transferred from Thaddeus Stevens to Central Penn, about the honor and his season so far…
You’ve been a solid contributor all season, but something kicked in during the last two games…
MW: Jumping into this school from a different team was a hard adjustment. We have four seniors in the starting lineup who already had chemistry with each other. I was getting frustrated with myself, but my teammates believed in me.
Against Villa Maria, you shot 6 for 6 from beyond the arc and 15 for 21 overall (71%). Have you ever had a game like that before?
MW: I had a game at my old school where I had 40, but I was not this efficient. This was probably my best game of my career.
What’s your reaction to being named Player of the Week? Were you surprised?
I was caught off guard… I was not expecting it at all, and I give all the credit to my teammates for finding me when i was open and giving me the opportunity.
