Hear ye, hear ye… The Capital BlueCross Theatre invites you to a sneak peek of the powerful play The Hand That Holds The Quill via six short videos. These will introduce you to the known and not-so-known characters behind the creation of the U.S. Constitution.

The Hand That Holds The Quill is an original play with music and a dash of comedy by local award-winning playwright Cindy Rock Dlugolecki and music by local composer Chris Purcell. The Capital BlueCross Theatre will present the play in September 2021.

The story centers around the drafting of the US Constitution. The playwright was inspired to write the play after she discovered that her long-lost relative, Jacob Shallus, served as the “engrosser” or scribe of the Constitution.

The play explores the question, “Who am I in the Constitution?” through the minds and emotions of four distinct groups:

  • The delegates who framed and drafted the document
  • The wives of the delegates and the daughter of Benjamin Franklin
  • The Shallus Family struggling to make ends meet
  • Absalom Jones and his wife Mary, free blacks of the AME church advocating for the abolition of slavery and literacy for the black community.

Will your voice be heard? Vote in the November 2020 elections and mark your calendars to attend the fully staged production of The Hand That Holds The Quill in September 2021 at The Capital BlueCross Theatre at Central Penn College.
