Knights lose double overtime thriller

In what was a defensive showdown, the Central Penn Knights were unable to secure their first win of the season on Friday at Adams Ricci Park against a gritty Penn State Mont Alto team. Central Penn fell in double overtime, 1–0.

It was the same score from five days previous… when the Knights lost to Mont Alto in an away contest to open the season.

Due to injuries, the Knights underwent several lineup changes throughout the week leading up to the game. Senior Max Thorpe (right) made his debut in goal, and he did not disappoint. Thorpe registered 8 saves, including a phenomenal diving stop, to prevent a shot from going into the bottom left corner.

Late in the second half, freshman Devin Kreiss found himself on a breakaway opportunity, before being pushed in the box, which appeared to be a definite foul. However, in the eyes of the referee, it was a clean tackle, and the game continued.

The contest looked as though it was going to end in an 0–0 draw, until Mont Alto found the breakthrough goal. The score came when Knights defense failed to clear ball, and Mont Alto forward Tyler Shannon capitalized on the mistake. He found himself one-on-one with Thorpe and slotted it past the Knights goalkeeper.

Even though Central Penn was srong defensively, the team’s offensive woes continued. The Knights only registered 5 shots for the entire game, forcing the Mont Alto goalkeeper into making 4 saves.

“Offensively, we still have work to do, but we will get there” said Head Coach Dustin Wise. “Overall, I thought we played a more complete game, than we did the last time we played them.”
