Professor Matthew O’Brien Brings Real-World Experience to Central Penn College Athletics

Matt O'Brien Central Penn College PTA

At Central Penn College, our faculty members aren’t just educators—they’re experts in their fields, bringing real-world experience into the classroom and beyond. One of the best examples of this is Professor Matthew O’Brien, our Physical Therapist Assistant academic coordinator of clinical education and now, officially, our athletic trainer. His career is a testament to the hands-on, career-focused education that defines Central Penn College.

Experience That Makes a Difference

With over 20 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer and physical therapist assistant, O’Brien has dedicated his career to helping athletes perform at their best while staying safe and injury-free. His background as a high school and college athlete gives him a unique perspective—he understands firsthand the physical demands of sports and the importance of proper training, treatment, and recovery.

Before stepping into his role at Central Penn, O’Brien worked extensively with local high schools and colleges, providing onsite therapy and injury prevention strategies. His deep knowledge and practical skills made him the perfect candidate to step in as interim athletic trainer last fall. Now, as the official athletic trainer for Central Penn, he’s ready to take athlete care and training to the next level.

More Than Just a Trainer—A Mentor

O’Brien’s approach to athletic training isn’t just about treating injuries—it’s about being a consistent, trusted presence for our athletes.

“It’s not about myself but the athletes,” he emphasizes. “I want the athletes to perform well, be safe, and of course, win. If I can help do that, then I would consider my job at Central Penn a success.”

His commitment to student-athletes goes beyond game day. Whether it’s taping an ankle before a big match, helping with rehabilitation, or providing guidance on injury prevention, he’s there when they need him. His office in ATEC 203 is always open, and he holds regular training room hours at Super Suite 127, ensuring athletes have easy access to care and expertise.

A Real-World Example of Career-Focused Education

O’Brien’s journey from athlete to trainer to educator embodies what Central Penn College stands for—learning by doing. His extensive field experience enhances our Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, giving students direct insight into the profession from someone actively working in it. By bridging the gap between education and practical application, he prepares students for real-world careers in healthcare, sports medicine, and rehabilitation.

This is the essence of Central Penn’s career-focused education. Our faculty don’t just teach from textbooks—they bring their professional experiences to the classroom, ensuring students gain relevant, hands-on skills that translate directly into the workforce.
